The Story Behind Yorkstone Paving
Yorkstone – also known as York stone or Yorkshire stone – is a traditional British sandstone, renowned for its durability and enduring aesthetic. Historically quarried in Yorkshire, this stone has been a staple in paving and construction for centuries. At Westminster Stone, we honour this heritage by meticulously crafting our Stonecast® Yorkstone Paving Slabs.
Our Stonecast® products are handcrafted at our family-run site, using time-worn Yorkstone slabs known as ‘masters’. Each of these masters carries a unique surface texture and patina, developed over decades of weathering. We take precise impressions of these historic stones to create our own specially crafted moulds. The result? Reproduction flag stones that are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing – authentic in both look and feel, but much more accessible and cost-effective.
Our Stonecast® process has been perfected over the last 40 years. Every stone flag is made with the highest quality raw materials and cast with incredible attention to detail – varying in size, shape and tone to reflect the natural variation of quarried Yorkstone. It’s this craftsmanship that sets our paving apart and has earned Westminster Stone recognition across the landscaping and heritage sectors.

FAQs
Why choose reproduction Yorkstone over natural Yorkstone?
Traditional Yorkstone paving stones are extremely expensive and difficult to source. Westminster Stone's handmade reproduction flags for patios and all outdoor spaces are readily available and more affordable, offering an authentic appearance that suits old and new settings alike.
Unlike reclaimed stone, which can be expensive and limited in supply, our Stonecast® paving flagstones are available in any quantity. This ensures that customers can return years later to purchase the exact product for extensions or repairs, providing consistency and peace of mind for long-term projects.
What’s the difference between reclaimed Yorkstone paving and reproduced stone?
Reclaimed Yorkstone Paving slabs have been previously used and salvaged from old buildings, streets or landscapes. It’s prized for its characterful appearance, with worn surfaces and subtle colour changes that only come from age and use, but it can be expensive, inconsistent in size, and difficult to source in large quantities.
Reproduced stone, like our handcrafted Yorkstone collection, is a high-quality alternative. Each stone flag is moulded from carefully selected originals, capturing every detail of aged stone while offering consistent sizing, easier installation and year-round availability. It’s the ideal way to achieve the look and feel of traditional Yorkstone with added practicality and value.
Are Yorkstone Paving flags porous?
Yorkstone is a natural sandstone that is porous and breathable, allowing moisture to pass through over time. Westminster Stone’s Stonecast® Yorkstone paving, while not quarried stone, is handcrafted using specially developed moulds taken from original York stone flags and made from high-quality reconstituted materials.
Although Stonecast® flagstones are not as porous as natural sandstone, they’re designed to replicate the same Yorkstone Paving texture and aged appearance while offering excellent performance in all weather conditions. They are frost-resistant, durable, and suitable for patios, paths and courtyards.
Are Yorkshire stone slabs easy to maintain?
Yes! Our York stone slabs and paving flagstones require minimal upkeep. Sweep regularly to remove debris and prevent moss build-up, and clean with mild soap and warm water when needed. Avoid harsh chemicals or aggressive pressure washing, as these can damage the surface of your York stone patio slabs. A breathable sealant can be applied to help protect your garden slabs and stones, keeping them looking their best year-round.
How to lay Yorkstone Paving?
Laying Yorkstone Paving is straightforward with the right preparation. Start by creating a firm, level foundation using compacted crushed stone, also known as MOT Type 1. This sub-base gives your patio or path the stability it needs to last for years. Each Yorkshire flagstone should be laid on a full mortar bed and gently tapped into place using a rubber mallet to ensure a secure, even finish.
Our mixed-size paving packs are ideal for traditional random layouts, helping you achieve a natural stone effect. You’ll find a coverage calculator and detailed installation guidance for each of our Yorkshire flagstones on the relevant product page.
