Traditional Paving: Stone Flagstones, Garden Flagstones, and Traditional Paving Slabs for Classic Gardens

Traditional garden paving has shaped British outdoor spaces for centuries: from the grand terraces of country houses to the simple flagged paths of village cottages. At Westminster Stone, we've spent 40 years crafting, curating, and supplying traditional paving slabs and stone flagstones that capture that same enduring character, whether you're restoring a listed building or simply seeking a timeless look for your patio.

Westminster Stone’s traditional garden paving slabs and flagstones are the perfect choice for enhancing the beauty of your home and garden.

Our traditional paving range spans authentic natural stone, including sandstone, limestone and slate, alongside our British-made Stonecast® range and the unique National Trust Paving Collection: meticulously handcrafted reproductions moulded from genuine antique stone originals.

Every slab in this collection is chosen for its ability to deliver an aged, characterful finish that looks as though it has always belonged.

Why Choose Traditional Paving Slabs?

Traditional paving is defined by its warmth, texture, and sense of history. Unlike contemporary paving, which tends towards crisp lines and uniform surfaces, traditional paving celebrates natural variation in colour, tone, and finish. This makes it especially suited to:

  • Period properties and listed buildings where traditional materials are essential
  • Cottage gardens where rustic, hand-cut, or riven surfaces complement planting
  • Country house gardens and farmhouse settings, where stone has always been used
  • Contemporary gardens seeking instant maturity, our aged and weathered finishes fast-track the look of decades of character
  • New-build homes with traditional architecture create a coherent, established feel

How to Choose Traditional Paving for Your Project

With so many options available with Westminster Stone, choosing the right traditional paving can feel overwhelming. Here's a quick guide by project type:

Patio Paving

For a patio, consider the scale of the space and the surrounding architecture. Mixed-size flags (like our Yorkstone Paving Slabs, Hidcote or Antique Honey Cathedral Paving) create the most authentic traditional feel, mimicking the random-sized slabs found in historic settings.

If uniformity is important, our Rainham Hall Flagstones offer a more structured look while retaining heritage character, and our Antique Honey range is also available in single sizes for a more consistent finish.

Garden Path Paving

Traditional path paving usually looks best with slightly narrower formats or a mix of sizes laid to a running bond or random pattern. Our collection of path slabs brings together options specifically suited to path widths, as well as pathway setts which can be used alongside to create definition and edge interest.

Driveway Paving

If you're paving a driveway, it's worth knowing that not every range is designed to take vehicle traffic, so choose a product suited to the job and build it up correctly. As a general guide, we don't recommend any natural stone under 30mm thick for driveway use.

Some of the best choices for a traditional driveway are our cobbles and setts, a number of our natural stone and Stonecast® setts are well suited to driveways as well as to edging, channelling and feature areas, along with our natural stone block paving. Our porcelain ranges can also be used on domestic driveways for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, provided they're laid on a suitable reinforced base.

Whichever you choose, the ground preparation and jointing make all the difference, so we'd always recommend following our planning and installation guide, or speaking to our team, to be sure the full construction is right for your driveway. It's also worth bearing in mind that lighter-coloured paving can be more prone to showing tyre marks.

Period Property & Listed Building Paving

We have extensive experience supplying paving for listed buildings and conservation areas. Our Stonecast® products have been independently assessed and approved for use in sensitive settings, and our team can advise on the most sympathetic choices for your property.

Sustainability & Provenance of our Traditional Paving Slabs

We believe beautiful paving shouldn't come at an environmental cost. Westminster Stone is a Planet Mark certified business committed to reducing carbon year on year.

Our Stonecast® range is Made in Britain, which reduces transportation miles significantly compared to imported natural stone. The National Trust chose our Stonecast® products specifically because they offer a more sustainable alternative to quarrying new natural stone from the ground.

We are also members of the Ethical Trading Initiative, the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI), and the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much paving I need for my project?

You can easily calculate the amount of paving needed for your project using the handy calculator on our product pages. Alternatively, our customer service team is always available to help you determine the correct quantity.

We always recommend ordering 10% extra to account for breakages, cuts, and measurement inaccuracies. This ensures you have enough material to complete your project without any delays.

Do you offer installation services for your traditional paving products?

While we don't offer installation services directly, we can recommend trusted landscapers and contractors in your area.

Can I order samples of your traditional paving before making a purchase?

Yes, we offer samples of many of our paving slabs so you can see and feel the quality and choose the right option for your project. Samples are available as a small 100x100mm tile or a more representative minimum size 300x150mm piece. Samples are a great way to check colour, texture, and finish in your own outdoor lighting conditions before ordering.

Do you offer trade discounts on traditional paving?

Yes, we offer trade accounts with preferential pricing for landscapers, architects, builders, and garden designers. We also offer bulk discounts on orders over 100m².

Do you offer any discounts or special offers on your traditional paving?

We occasionally run promotions, sales, and special offers. Sign up for our newsletter or follow us on social media to stay informed about the latest deals. You can find us on Facebook and Twitter (X), get inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram, or get DIY insights and more on the Westminster Stone YouTube channel.

What traditional paving is best for a period property or listed building?

Our Stonecast® collection is independently assessed and has been approved for use in listed buildings and conservation settings. It replicates genuine antique stone originals and has been specified by architects, conservationists, and the National Trust for restoration projects. The National Trust Paving Collection is also specifically designed for heritage and period settings.

We recommend contacting our team or visiting a display centre if you're working on a listed property, as we can advise on the best choice for your project.

Are traditional paving slabs suitable for driveways?

While some of our thicker traditional paving slabs may be suitable for light vehicle traffic, we recommend a minimum thickness of 40mm for driveway paving to withstand heavier loads. For this reason, our Stonecast product, with its 40mm thickness, is the best option out of all our products for driveway use.

We also offer a range of specialised driveway paving products designed to handle heavy vehicle traffic and provide long-lasting performance.

How do I maintain traditional stone paving and flagstones?

Traditional paving is designed to be low maintenance. Regular sweeping and occasional washing with clean water is usually sufficient.

For deeper cleaning, use a pH-neutral stone cleaner; avoid acidic products, bleach, or high-pressure washing at close range as these can damage the stone surface.

Can traditional paving be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes, many of our traditional paving slabs and flagstones are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, allowing for a seamless flow between inside and outside. This is particularly popular for conservatories and boot rooms. Check individual product pages for indoor/outdoor suitability, and look for our traditional stone flooring range for interior-specific options.

What is your return policy if I'm not satisfied with my purchase?

We have a comprehensive return policy. Please refer to our website or contact our customer service team for details.
