Slate is first thought to have appeared in use in Wales during Roman times in Caernarfon, with widespread use not increasing until the 18th and 19th centuries. By the end of the 1700s Wales was responsible for half of the UK’s total slate production. The main quarries of Wales were Penrhyn Quarry near Bethesda, Dinorwic Quarry near Llanberis and Nantlle Valley. Blaenau Ffestiniog is home to the biggest slate mine in the world, and now houses a number of great outdoor activities such as the Bounce Below caverns and the custom made Antur Stiniog downhill mountain biking trails. Smaller slate facilities were found in South Wales in Corris and Pembrokeshire.
In a garden paving setting, slate makes a definite statement. It’s cool blue/black/grey tones help define garden design spaces and provide a wonderful contrast to carefully chosen planting. The greens, whites, purples and silvers of flowers and plants appear more vibrant with natural slate patio stones, the balance of light and dark matched evenly across the garden paving space.
