Paving Slabs and Thickness

Most of our paving slabs come in single sizes or mixed-size packs:

  • 600x600mm is the most versatile single size, easy to lay and suited to modern grids. Browse 600x600 paving slabs.

  • 900x600mm suits larger patios, where fewer joints give a calmer, more contemporary finish.

  • Mixed-size packs combine several sizes for a random, traditional pattern. Many Stonecast® and sandstone packs mix multiple sizes to cover a set area.

Thickness varies by material. Porcelain slabs are typically 20mm, natural stone ranges from around 20mm to 50mm, and Stonecast® flagstones are a uniform 40mm. Calibrated slabs have an even thickness, which makes laying quicker. Use the Thickness filter to narrow the range, and see our laying guides for bedding depths.

Paving Slabs for Every Part of the Garden

  • Patios: choose a stable, even surface sized for seating and dining. See our patio slabs.

  • Paths: narrower formats and mixed packs follow curves and steps neatly. Browse path slabs and pathway setts.

  • Driveways: vehicle areas need slabs and a sub-base to handle the load. Browse driveway paving and cobbles, or call us to check suitability.

  • Balconies and terraces: thinner, lighter porcelain keeps loads down. See balcony and terrace paving.

  • Pools: textured, slip-resistant finishes that stay cool underfoot. See swimming pool stone.

Why Choose Westminster Stone

British Paving Specialists Since 1985

Westminster Stone is a family-run business based near Ellesmere in Shropshire. We've made paving here since 1985, and our Stonecast® flagstones are still handcrafted in our own workshop from moulds of original British flagstones.

Since 2011, we've been licensed to make the National Trust Paving Collection, reproducing flagstones, brick pavers and tiles found at National Trust properties. Stonecast® won Best Paving at the Ideal Home 2024 Garden Awards, and our flagstones have appeared on Escape to the Château and on BBC period drama sets.

You can see our paving laid at five display centres: our Shropshire headquarters, Burford Garden Company in the Cotswolds, Grosvenor Garden Centre in Chester, Charlie's Garden Centre in Welshpool and Bridgemere Garden Centre near Nantwich.

Paving Slabs FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do paving slabs cost per m²?

Our paving slabs start from around £26 per m² (ex. VAT) for hand-cut sandstone. Limestone and slate typically run from about £31 to £50 per m², porcelain from around £35, and British-made Stonecast® flagstones from £59.75. Add your measurements on any product page to see exact pack pricing for your area.

What size paving slabs are most popular?

600x600mm is the most popular single size because it's easy to handle, lay and plan around. 900x600mm suits larger patios with fewer joints. For a traditional look, mixed-size packs combine several sizes in a random pattern, which is how many of our Stonecast® and sandstone ranges are supplied.

Is natural stone or porcelain paving better?

It depends on the look and upkeep you want. Natural stone has unique colour variation and weathers attractively, but benefits from sealing. Porcelain is dense, stain-resistant and consistent in colour, so it needs very little maintenance. Natural stone suits traditional gardens; porcelain suits crisp, modern schemes and indoor-outdoor flow. Read more in our Natural Stone vs Porcelain Paving guide.

Do paving slabs need sealing?

Natural stone doesn't always need sealing, but a breathable, water-based stone sealer helps resist staining and makes cleaning easier. Stonecast® benefits from occasional sealing to protect its colour. Porcelain is non-porous and doesn't need sealing. See our guide to caring for natural paving stones.

How many packs of paving slabs do I need?

Measure the length and width of your area in metres and multiply them to get the area in m². Add around 10% for cuts and breakages. Enter your measurements using Add Your Measurements, and we'll show the number of packs you need on every product.

Can I see paving slabs before I buy?

Yes. Order a 100x100mm sample or a 300x300mm sample, or visit one of our five display centres in Shropshire, the Cotswolds, Chester, Welshpool and Nantwich to see our paving laid in a garden setting.

What is Stonecast® paving?

Stonecast® is our own cast stone, made in Shropshire from moulds of reclaimed Yorkstone, Cotswold stone and Welsh slate, at a uniform 40mm thickness. It won Best Paving at the Ideal Home 2024 Garden Awards. Find out more about Stonecast®.
