The colour of the year according to Livingetc, Terracotta has certainly made a strong comeback in 2022, and we’re here for it!

The saturated hue of terracotta can be like marmite, you either love it, or hate it. However, not only has terracotta been named the colour of the year by trend-led magazine Livingetc, it’s also included in Valspars’ 2023 colour trend predictions.

When thinking of terracotta, a vivid, burnt orange hue springs to mind. However for 2022 and beyond, a more muted hue is gaining popularity. With Farrow & Ball’s Faded Terracotta being awarded the colour of the year by Livingetc, it’s safe to say it’s here to stay!

If you’re considering embracing the terracotta trend in your outdoor space, we’ve got an abundance of styling ideas to make the perfect, serene garden. So without further ado, here are our top terracotta paving ideas!

Mediterranean Haven

Create a calming Mediterranean haven by combining terracotta paving slabs with intricate terracotta edging tiles for an authentically adriatic feel. The beauty of these Cheshire Patio edging tiles is that they can be laid flat to create interest and an elegant feel.

Alternatively, they can be placed upright to create a practical border full of colourful Mediterranean flowers and plants such as fragrant rosemary and lavender or even the exotic passion flower and olive trees.

If you’re a lover of all things Mediterranean, why not take inspiration from the contrasting contemporary colours you see as you stroll down the narrow streets of Majorca or Italy. We absolutely love terracotta tiles paired with aqua blue and golden yellow for a really vibrant and positive Mediterranean feel.

Country Chic

Embrace the country chic trend with rustic outdoor terracotta tiles. We particularly love the deep, burnt terracotta tile colour for this trend as it lends itself well to outdoor applications. You can truly embrace nature by creating subtle contrast between the natural hues found in the outdoors such as sage and forest greens against the vibrant terracotta tones.

Our Chedworth tiles perfectly balance the rugged country look with a refined and elegant feel that you’ll love for years to come. They also create a stunning look within semi-outdoor spaces such as orangeries, greenhouses and conservatories alike.

If you love the gardens of Provence, why not create your very own sanctuary full of French-inspired flowers and foliage for a truly relaxing outdoor experience. Reminiscent of the cobbled streets of rural French towns, our Old Provence tiles will add a touch of Provencal living to any home. Pair with vibrant lavenders of various shades to provide an uplifting contrast and depth to your garden that takes you back to those summer evenings, relaxing in the south of France.

Cosy Cabin

If you’re a green-fingered garden lover, you’ll want to make the most of your outdoor space all year round. Creating a cosy cabin to snuggle up in during those winter and autumn months (or even on those drizzly British summer days) is the best way to embrace your garden, whatever the weather!

Terracotta tiles really stand out when paired with exposed brick due to the range of clay, burnt orange and pink hues within the bricks themselves. We have truly fallen for the outdoor fireplace within this cosy pavilion! Don’t you just want to roast marshmallows and drink hot chocolate whilst the rain pours down? We know we do!

Poolside Perfection

Terracotta paving stones look beautiful when placed next to water. Whether you have a water feature, hot tub or are lucky enough to have an outdoor swimming pool, the blue hue from water perfectly contrasts with the orange tones in the paving stones. Blue and orange sit on the opposite side of the colour wheel, that’s why create such a harmonious and tranquil feel when paired together.

If you want to take this style one step further, why not pot your plants in deep blue ceramic pots to tie everything together?

Quintessentially British

If you’ve been following our blog for a while, you’ll know how much we love the quintessentially British style! That’s why we love the look of our terracotta brick pavers, inspired by the landscape heritage of National Trust gardens throughout the UK. We have such a rich and inspiring history of architecture and landscaping in Britain and we at Westminster Stone love to embrace and celebrate this.

Pairing terracotta brick pavers with traditional British flowers such as the vibrant purple alliums pictured below creates a timeless and elegant feel to this country garden, and we love it!

Seasonal Sensations

As the seasons change, so do our moods and taste preferences. The great thing about terracotta tiles is that they are extremely versatile and can be styled to suit the changing seasons.

Not only do they look great during summer’s golden hour, contrasting with lavender meadows, they also look beautiful when autumn leaves begin to fall. The rich and earthy burnt oranges, auburns and yellows bring out the vibrant terracotta colour and almost wrap your garden in a blanket of warmth.

For the perfect autumn porch, style terracotta brick pavers with a range of pumpkins and autumn leaves of all sizes and colours for a truly inviting and cosy entrance to your home.
