With the longer days arriving this weekend, we embraced the March sunshine and went for a spring walk around Powis Castle & Gardens.

Once a medieval castle, fortress & mansion near Welshpool, Wales, it is now in the care of the National Trust.

The property is well known for the large collection of Indian treasures on display, brought back by Robert Clive & his son during their service with the British East India Company.

We hope you enjoy our short video tour, photo galleries and notes from the day.

The Gardens

Stepping out onto the forecourt, through the stone archway and down one of the magnificent staircases, we were instantly greeted by an array of colourful flowers, including several thriving magnolia trees in full bloom, lining the red brick walls.

Wandering into the classic gardens we came to the spectacular Italianate terraces, blasted into the solid sandstone, each level brimming with character. The views across the Severn Valley and Breidden Hills from here were breath taking in the spring sunshine.

Among the terraces, 18th Century statues adorn the balustrade and an idyllic orangery is home to some interesting foliage.

The Formal gardens contain 100 year old apple trees, a stone water fountain, multiple hidden patios, traditional flagstones, meticulously maintained lawns and carefully pruned Yew hedge pathways, which all made for a truly relaxing walk with plenty of lovely photo opportunities.

One of the most magical parts of Powis Castle has to be the enchanting giant Yew tree topiary. First planted in the 1680s, the original Yews were planted in geometric designs, fashionable at the time, but by the end of the next century had been allowed to develop into more natural shapes, enveloping the top terrace.

Worlds Apart In War

Inside the castle a new event ‘Worlds Apart in War’ had just begun, an interactive exhibition exploring the time period of 1939-1946, when the second world war broke out and Powis castle opened its doors to an all girls school from Middlesex.

With previously unseen rooms, audio installations & live interpretations, the knowledgeable and friendly staff are on hand to immerse one in the girls story.

Featuring a reconstructed dorm room, common room & classroom, with ample opportunity for dress up & role play, children are actively encouraged to play and explore the whole second floor.
