Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Llangollen, North Wales, lies Tyn Dwr Hall, a truly enchanting wedding venue steeped in history and grandeur. last summer, we had the privilege of collaborating with the team at Tyn Dwr Hall on a stunning commercial landscaping project, showcasing the unparalleled beauty and robust performance of our Antique Cragside Sandstone Paving. In this exclusive case study, we delve into how our premium paving has seamlessly enhanced the exterior of this magnificent period property, transforming a high-traffic area into an elegant and practical pathway that looks as though it has always been there. We'll explore the design choices, the aesthetic and practical benefits of our Antique Cragside Sandstone, and why it was the perfect fit for a venue of Tyn Dwr Hall's calibre.

Tyn Dwr Hall was originally built as a shooting lodge for Mr John Dickin, a steel and iron merchant from Liverpool, in 1886. It passed into the hands of Baron Joseph Duveen in the 1920’s. Was seconded during the Second World War as a military rehabilitation centre, following which it became a Youth Hostel until the turn of the 21st Century. The University of Central Lancaster refurbished the Hall in 2007 to use as their Outdoor Centre. The current iteration is an exclusive Country Hall Wedding Venue.

The original bell, which is still rung to announce the Newlyweds at the end of each ceremony and can be seen rising high from the centre of the building, was originally used to call in the shooting and fishing parties from the surrounding Estate.

Can you tell us about the design of the garden?

We were provided with samples of Westminster Stone’s garden paving products and in consultation with their representative and the owners we were able to make a choice which we felt best suited the Hall.

Why did you choose Oxford Courtyard Paving?

We chose Antique Cragside Sandstone Paving as the main surface with a brindle paved border as we felt it best complemented the existing aesthetic of the Hall. The greatest compliment we have had is that the path looks like it has been laid for years!

What do you think they have added to your design?

The products, once installed, gave an instant improvement in both looks and practicality compared to the loose slate path that they replaced. No more muddy shoes or hems of dresses.

How do you feel the colours of the Antique Cragside paving work with the material and history of Tyn Dwr?

The colours and material of the Antique Cragside Sandstone slabs blend seamlessly with the existing sandstone coins on the corners of the building and around the large picture windows. The same can be said for the matching of the brindle border with the existing brickwork.

How was your experience of working with Westminster Stone?

From our first meeting with Nigel, your representative, who was very patient and extremely accommodating and knowledgeable, through the whole process of choosing the right product for us. All the way to ordering the paving slabs, storing and delivering to site on the exact day that we needed them, our experience of working with Westminster Stone has been first-class.

For landscapers, garden designers, and architects in the Llangollen area and beyond, the Tyn Dwr Hall project exemplifies how traditional paving can elevate any property, offering unparalleled durability, character, and an instant sense of establishment. Say goodbye to muddy pathways and hello to an inviting entrance that stands the test of time, both aesthetically and practically.

Antique Cragside Sandstone Paving

These wonderful ethically sourced, natural sandstone Antique Cragside Paving slabs, go through a tumbling and antiquing process to make them appear weathered and worn.

The effect is very authentic, and an excellent substitute to native reclaimed York stone flags, which are highly sought after, and consequently very much more expensive.  Antique Sandstone is ideal where a more traditional, aged effect flag is sought. Each individual antique sandstone paving slab is unique in its natural beauty with colours and surface texture which will blend perfectly with older properties or gardens where an established feel is required.
