The floor of any building plays an important role in providing the background to its character, contributing to the overall appearance and complementing the building’s architecture. Especially when listed or period properties are concerned. Grade 1 & 2 listed buildings are required by law to retain, re-use and repair any existing floors that are original to the building. Many period properties have original flags which can prove tricky when restoring as many original flagstones such as Yorkstone are notoriously expensive and extremely difficult to source.

We understand the need for those working on restoration or conservation projects to look for products that offer carefully considered detail and design, and it is what we have been working on for over 30 years at our base in Shropshire. Many of our Stonecast products have already been approved for use in listed buildings.

Why Westminster Stone?

Westminster Stone’s Managing Director John Clifford develops moulds in-house, using sourced originals that he has handpicked from around the country. With meticulous attention to detail, each mould is handmade with a different patina, shape and size to create paving that is completely authentic in appearance and as close a replica to the original natural stone flags as it’s possible to create. The intricate skill and craftsmanship of these unique moulds have been recognised, awarded and applauded throughout the industry for decades. All of our Stonecast products are manufactured in the UK and we are members of Made in Britain.

We realise consistency is a key factor when undertaking a sympathetic project. Our Bespoke service offers the flexibility to gain hand made reproduction flagstones and tiles in customised size, thickness, texture and colour. Take a look at some of our paving and flooring already laid in listed and period properties below.

Listed & Period Property Case Studies

Escape to the Chateau

Angel chose our aged National Trust Hidcote Flagstones for part of the chateau renovations.  We supplied 25 tonnes of paving which is seen arriving at the Chateau (in Episode 3) and laid to the front of the property to form a stunning new terrace ready for beautiful weddings! They were so impressed with our paving, Angel created a bold and beautiful flooring design using Old Provence Petite Lozenge & Charcoal Tile for the magical Folly and Yorkstone Paving was chosen for the walled garden.

Barns & Yard at Hanley Hall

We supplied paving for many areas of this stunning luxury, listed barn. The barns and current hall date back to the reign of Henry VIII, and still retain the timber framing, ornate plasterwork and stone fireplaces. Our Henslate flooring was chosen for its instant maturity, adding to the character and charm already present. Externally it was important to create beautiful open spaces as a backdrop for photography and for easy outdoor entertaining. Our Traditional Paving was used for this with a mix of Henslate Paving and Castle Blend Paving. Old Stone Cottage

Our Hidcote Flooring was used to great effect in this stunning cottage. Old Stone Cottage is a 17th Century former smallholding. It was constructed using traditional oak framing and local sandstone.

"The tones of the Hidcote flags matched the internal sandstone walls perfectly. They suited the property, they had great durability (dogs and children!), they could be used with underfloor heating, and they could be produced in a reduced 25mm thickness" Read More...

Mill House Case Study

The brief for Mill House was to create a replacement pool building and garden that was sympathetic to the setting of a listed house built in 1703. They used a mix of products including Terracotta Tiles, Lancashire Mill and Antique Honey Cathedral Limestone Read More..

Externally we wanted to create a traditional winding country path across the lawn leading to a Windmill. In the kitchen we wanted a traditional orange coloured brick floor, we felt that this could look lovely alongside larger rustic stones, in a contrasting colour. Also, it is quite common to see stone floors in timber-framed houses. We love square terracotta tiles and wanted to use them somewhere in the house."
